By now you should have completed your key word research as described in step 1 and have a list of key words for your new web site, if not you can go to step 1 here .
When choosing your domain name you should consider a name with your main key word in the title for example if your site is going to be about tropical fish you can choose a domain name like www.tropicalfish.com this is a bonus with the search engines as they like key word rich domain names.
With google this is not so important but with MSN/Bing it is very important you can test this by going to MSN/Bing and typing any key word in the search and you will see that most if not all of the top ten results have that keyword in the main domain.
If you are choosing a .com domain name it is not always possible as so many domain names have been taken but you can go through your key word list to find something that is relevant and highly searched and don’t forget you can use the – between key words for example tropical-fish.com
This video focuses on the questions:
Which is the best domain name extension – .com, .net, .org, .com.au, etc – does it matter?
Should you avoid hyphenation in domain names?
Does “keyword density” affect domain names?
Adding prefixes and suffixes to domains – what are the right and wrong ways?
Its important to note that if you intend to use a wordress blog installed on your new domain you should choose a web host with one click installation, its a good idea to take a look at the control panel before buying your domain and web space, the one click installation is so easy to install wordpress I will go into this in more detail in step 3.
Also please remember that this is going to be a long term business for you so don’t pick a web host that is not very well known, they may be ok but you need to consider are they going to be around in the coming years you do not want to spend weeks or months adding content to your site and a year or so promoting the site just to find that the web host goes out of business in 2 years from now, all your hard work will be lost.
There are many types of web hosts and many types of control panels the one I use is called “CPanel” which has a section called “fantasticoDeluxe” this is the one click installation for scripts such as wordpress.
www.hostgator.com has Cpanel with fantasticodeluxe
I recommend always using wordpress as it is very well set up and works well with the search engines.
Step 3 will cover how to install your wordpress blog on your server and how to configure it to function at it’s best.
